What the textbook thinks a histogram and a frequency histogram are...
What a histogram and a frequency histogram really are...
- Histograms are used only for continuous data (so NOT number of phones!), this is why the columns must touch! We group continuous data in adjacent classes.
- The frequencies do NOT go on the y-axis : What matters is the area, not the height of the columns. Therefore, no, a histogram is not a special bar graph, it is an entirely different thing.
- If you make the area of each column equal to the relative frequency rather than the frequency, the total area of the histogram (sum of the areas of the columns) is 1. When we draw the frequency polygon, we make sure also have an area of 1 below the curve (hence the half column on both sides).
- Why do we want the area below the curve to be equal to 1? Teachers, you have probaly guessed by now: An histogram is the baby version of a probabilty given by an area below a curve. The curve is the frequency polygon.
